Answering Service
Our members respond to approximately 40 calls a week to our Answering Service/Voice Mail at 954-525-4667. We
provide this service to the public as a way to obtain information about the services we provide, as well as
specific information about other clubs in the area. Our members monitor the calls as frequently as possible,
blending this duty into their already busy schedules. We are proud of the fact that the majority of calls are responded to in less
than 24 hours.
Used Eye Glass/Hearing Aids Collection
We participate in Lions
International and SVOSH (Student Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity)
eye glass recycling
projects.
The Lions have several recycling stations throughout the country. At these stations the used
eyeglasses are sorted, cleaned, the prescriptions read and glasses labeled. They are then packed and sent to different
countries to be dispensed to needy children and adults. We have assisted SVOSH on
several of their 'visits' to other countries, by providing several thousands of pairs of
eyeglasses to be dispensed to the local citizens at no cost.
Our Club also participates in Lions International
hearing projects. With any donated hearing aids, we are able to obtain 'credit' from hearing aid
companies. We then use this 'credit' when we provide a new or refurbished hearing aid to
someone in need.
Camp Work Weekends
Twice a year, we visit The Florida Lions Camp for the Visually
Impaired near Lake Wales and assist with any chores that need to be done. We help
with cleaning, repairs and have even laid sidewalks. While at Camp, we work hard but also
have a good time. The Camp is such a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, you often leave feeling
refreshed, relaxed and definitely fulfilled. By our 'work weekends' more money can be used
toward providing children with the 'fun of camping' experience.
City Festivals
We are pleased to have been invited to man a vendors booth at a number of the Fort
Lauderdale's Music Festivals. This gives us the opportunity to meet the public and let them know
we are here to SERVE. It also gives us an opportunity to raise funds - so if you see us at a
festival, stop by and say hi! :o)
Eye Exams and Eye Glasses
Our primary project is providing eye exams and glasses at no cost to the needy in our community.
We work together with a number of local schools and agencies to identify children that may need
glasses. We assist an average of 12 to 15 individuals each month and are proud that we
have assisted in developing better grades for some school children and employment
opportunities for some adults.
Hearing Exams and Hearing Aids
In addition to providing eye exams and glasses at no cost to the needy in our community, we also
provide hearing exams and hearing aids. We have only recently begun providing this service,
however, we are proud that we have been able to have already assisted with hearing aids for
children, some elderly and a teacher.
Holiday Baskets
While we are not able to provide a large number of baskets to families at the holidays, we do try
to brighten as many children's lives as possible. We identify needy families where the children
may not receive anything and try to provide a set of clothes and a favorite toy for each child. We
will also provide a food basket.
